Some customers may have experienced a period of degraded performance of their Shell Services. We are taking measures to correct this by performing maintenance and resource upgrades on our platform on short notice.

On 2012-04-24 21:15 Helsinki time we will perform reboots, which require your instance of irssi to be relaunched. We recommend the command ‘screen -S irssi irssi‘.

We reserve a service window between 21:20 and 21:50.

Wrongly configured availability check for this status site

The uptime reporting for this offsite status blog has been wrongly configured to check our main site for a few months. We discovered this during the last outage. Since we aim for transparent reporting of our services availability levels, this is of course a regrettable mistake.

This blog is hosted on a completely separate system in a different geographic region. The availability of this site does not affect any other of our systems. This allows us to use a more affordable hosting deal for this single purpose monitoring site.

If you’ve been hosting with people related to what is now known as Awkward Cake for a long time, chances are that some of your old, non-AC sites and projects are still on the very same system used for this monitoring site. Consider the monitoring of these a free bonus.

Our web hosting partner confirms issues with their load balancers. All web services are down since 2012-01-11 19:03. The services are expected to be restored shortly.

Today, as of 2011-03-17, 12:21, our web hosting services are suffering from an outage. We’re awaiting further details from our technology partner.

UPDATE 12:53: Our partner has acknowledged a major network outage at their Bluesquare facility.

UPDATE 13:07: The network issue itself is reportedly over, out partner is working to restore access to all servers.

UPDATE 14:40: Some hosted sites are back. WordPress sites set up behind the newly implemented cache/accelerator are still unavailable.

UPDATE 15:09: All systems are up and running. Please contact us if any issues remain unresolved. We apologize for any inconvenience this outage may have caused.

Awkward Cake uses free software from the Debian project

Update 2011-03-08 3:53 PM: We have completed the upgrade. You can restart your IRC session by logging on and entering the command ‘screen -S irssi irssi’.

Update 2011-03-08 4:13 PM: We have corrected an issue, which prevented certain users from logging on to their Shell Services after the system upgrade. The problem was caused by a configuration error related to one of our security measures. We apologize for the inconvenience.

All Shell Service customers will experience a service interruption later today, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 due to a major operating system upgrade.

We reserve a service window between noon and 5 pm (Helsinki time) for the upgrade, although the procedure is likely to require significantly less time.

To iron out possible issues, our upgrade procedures will be tested in detail on an identical copy of the virtual environment hosting our shell customers.

Several reboots may be necessary during the upgrade. Any running background processes, such as Irssi in Screen, will require a restart once the upgrades have been completed.

Customers will be informed by SMS once the Shell Service is back on track. Any data, such as logs and configurations, will remain unchanged during the upgrade. Backups are tested and available.

On Tuesday February 22, around 00:15, Helsinki time, our shell services began suffering from severe packet loss. It would seem like our environment is up and running, but behind a very unresponsive network connection. No reboots have been issued so far. Our provider is aware of the networking issue and working to resolve it.

Edit: Network access to our shell services returned after 12-15 minutes of unavailability (depending on client location).

On Monday January 17, around 23:00 PM, Helsinki time, our shell services suffered from a brief connectivity problem. Our technology partner resolved the issue within fifteen minutes. Screened applications should run unaffected.

Analytics Service failed to process daily visitor reports

Awkward Cake’s Analytics Service failed to process daily visitor reports for approximately the last week. This error was caused by a malconfigured cron job (scheduled task) and is now resolved. Missing daily stats have now been processed and are displayed correctly.
